There are a lot of people on Facebook nowadays, and I have to say that it is not necessarily for the best. Facebook is a wonderful idea, with a massive amount of users. This simple website created by Mark Zuckerberg, is so popular it even has a fictional movie on it’s creation, and the life of the creator. Of course the movie was mostly fiction, but the focus here is Facebook itself. It is such a simple idea to make a website based on communication, but when you think about it, what is the most flawed thing about internet communication? Identity. If I wanted to, right now I could create a Facebook account. Mark and his staff made that easy enough to do in just a few minutes.
However, what if i had a picture of a person who isn’t me on my computer? what if I happened to use that picture as my profile picture? or better yet, what if I even made my name the same as the name of the person in the picture? Then I could talk to all of the people who I know associate with that person, with them thinking they are talking to that person. Now here comes the obvious solution, only add friends that you know well and know are the real owners of that account right? Well that works fine, unless the person has their Facebook hacked into. No matter what, there is always a risk. There is always a chance that your account will be hacked or you will be talking to a hacker or one of those phishing spam things that get people so often. So, how do you stay safe online? The real answer is that you don’t. The internet is a communication device, however it is really impersonal. Even companies have merged into the social space. McDonald’s, Lowe’s and Burger King. They all have Facebook accounts.
