iCloud Available Now

iCloud was released by Apple today, free to people who own iPhones, iPod Touches, iPads, and Macs.  It comes with a free email address, which is nice.  The truly cool thing about it though is the fact that all of your pictures, songs in your iTunes music library, movies, select files, email, calendars, notes, and messages automatically sync to the Cloud.  This means the end of tethered software updates for devices running on iOS, too.  After you plug in today to update your iPhone or iPad through iTunes, you will not have to do that again.  Instead, you”ll now find a software update button under Settings, General.  And when you buy a new iPad or iPhone, you can set it up right out of the box without having to connect to a PC or Mac.

All of the items you sync in iCloud are stored there, but made instantly available to all your compatible devices, automatically.  The beauty of Apple’s cloud based service lies in its ability to hang in the background, just quietly doing its job while you live, work, and play.  That’s really the way it should be, after all.

Enjoy this introductory spot from Apple.  You can download iOS 5 today after upgrading iTunes.  iCloud is built right in.
